These were taken at Ariel's Point, a cliff jumping location about an hour and a half's sailboat ride away from where we were staying. We spent hours jumping from all the diving spots, one as high as 18m, eating bbq, snorkeling, and swimming. On the way back to where we were staying the sun went down and the wind died. Our guide had to call one of his friends to tow us in and used his cell phone as a light signal for them to find us. None of us were bothered by the delay-the amount of stars you can see from there is incredible and we were just enjoying ourselves.

It's been a long time since I've posted anything but the last few months have held some of the most inspiring, eye-opening, and amazing experiences of my life. In October I went to the Eddie Adams Workshop in Jeffersonville, NY with 99 other photographers and from the second we arrived until the second we left we were being loaded with information, advice, critiques, and life lessons from some of the greatest people in photojournalism. I can't even explain how much it meant to me to be a part of something like that and to meet so many other people who care so much about what they do. The work put into holding a weekend like that is incredible and I can't thank the staff enough.

A few days after returning home from New York I left on a plane bound for the Philippines, the first stop of a two-month backpacking trip with my brother and some friends he made while teaching english in South Korea. We traveled through seven countries-the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia. I will be posting several blog posts in the next few days documenting some of the people and places we met and experienced during our time abroad. Please feel free to ask any questions via email or in the comment section!

People are constantly amazing me. Every new story that I start evolves into something that I care about so much regardless of who or what it is--the subject becomes a part of my life no matter how old they are, what they're going through, or what background they come from. The simple fact that people are so open to sharing their story so intimately with not only me but with whatever unknown audience comes with the permanence of a photograph is incredibly humbling. I just hope that I can show the true nature of whoever is in front of my camera in a way that makes people ask questions or just want to know more. I've never gotten more support nor more table conversations from a story than I have for the current one I'm working on, and I hope I can deliver in an honest way.

Home is where the heart is

For me, that place is a summer cottage on the Annisquam River in Gloucester, MA, a fishing town made popular by the film The Perfect Storm. Over the years it's been a meeting place of grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins, friends, my parents, and my brother. In twenty-three years, I've only missed one stay there and it was the most homesick I've ever felt. A place where you kick off your shoes and run down the hill to where the float meets the water and the rocks and the sand laden with hermit crabs, mussels, and seaweed. You can count on happy hour on the front porch, gold fish in one hand and a beer in the other, watching the sun set as boats pass and the incoming tide covers the marsh across the channel.

It's beautiful, it's family, it's home.

I was driving towards the highway on my way home from an assignment downtown this morning and saw this man outside smoking his pipe, so I looped back around the block to talk to him. He was the nicest man and ended showing me the inside of the Masonic Center on 5th street where they're holding the Last Chance Qualifier this week as the last opportunity for boxers to make it to the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Chances are, I'll be heading back there to talk to James some more. He grew up in Cincinnati and has been the security guard there since 1990, with the exception of a few years off.

Journalism has been a huge release for me over the last two years. It's a combination of so many things I love--the chance to be somewhere I normally wouldn't be, meeting people whether they're politicians, athletes, a member of the community, or a passerby on the street and being able to tell their story in a way to hopefully make someone else actually care. Knowing the backstory and seeing what goes into a production along with the end result. For so long I took so many things for granted--going to see a play and enjoying it but never really appreciating how much effort goes into it, not just from the people presented to you on stage but all the people you will never see and will probably never know worked to make something like a CCM musical a success. Watching someone take a needle and a few strands of hair to make a wig will make you realize that it really can take 40+ hours, easily, to make one single wig for one single person on the stage. Being a journalist gives you the opportunity to show that to other people.

I get antsy pretty easily--I wrote a post earlier about how I moved to Colorado because of an urge to move and experience something new. Well, two years ago journalism and photography became that escape. I was always itching to do something, go somewhere, anywhere. Instead of moving this time though, I'd go to a CCM rehearsal or set building and it would settle that unsettled feeling I couldn't seem to get rid of at the time.

I always said that when I graduated I'd be gone and looking for a new place to live. Not because I didn't love Cincinnati or the people here, but because there is so much else out there to see. I've been surprised at myself with how content I've been staying in Cincinnati after graduation without any plans of moving or that urge to move that I've had for so many years. Then I have to laugh at myself because I remember that in the last year I've travelled to China and climbed the Great Wall among other places in Beijing, went to New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl and New Years Eve, drove to and from California, and lived in San Francisco for a summer. I need to unwind a little bit and just enjoy being in my home city with family and friends I've known for years. Who knows when I'll move and when I'll be back home again, but for right now, I think that being content trumps anything else.

The past few weeks I’ve been working with photographer Ryan Kurtz and art director Kate Gallion to get ready for a US Bank advertisement that was finally shot this past Tuesday and Wednesday at Mammoth Café, Madison Bowl, and Dater Montessori School. It’s amazing how much goes into a production like this. I shot two of the three casting calls with Pablo, another assistant of Ryan’s, and there were 700 people total that came through the studio. It felt like an assembly line—we had two backdrops set up and whenever somebody was finished filling out their paperwork they would hand it to Ryan or Kate, come to one of the two stations set up, and either Pablo or I would take a few head and full body shots, and they would be done in a matter of minutes. Apart from that, there was location scouting done by Casey and countless other errands to be run. For the actual shoot I worked as a production assistant and basically helped clear out, set up, and rebuild the set to make it look real but also clean enough to be photographed.

The three locations couldn’t have been more different. The café and the teachers lounge in the school basically needed to be completely cleared out before we brought our own props back in. At the café, tables, lamps, and miscellaneous items on the counter were removed before we reorganized the tables, added a chalk board with “today’s specials,” artwork from Ryan’s studio, food and new plates and glassware. In the teacher’s lounge, Jenna and I cleared out two full bookshelves, a refrigerator, a microwave, a coffee maker (just to bring our own back in), tables, stacks of paper, etc. We added a cabinet and mailboxes we built for the shot. We added a sticker to the glass window in the door that read ‘Teacher’s Lounge’ and had to color the original gold color black with dry erase markers because the gold was reflecting too much from the lights we had set up. All windows in every shot were frosted with lights set up outside to filter through.

The bowling alley was interesting because you had to set up the lighting equipment so that the light was evenly distributed for the length of multiple lanes. That coupled with the lighting to illuminate the five subjects made it a little more difficult. There wasn’t much set up to the shot in the bowling alley other than little things, like choosing bowling balls to be included and taping the bottoms of the bowling shoes worn by the talent so that nothing was damaged.

It really is amazing how much work goes into something like this. It is a complete and total collaboration between fashion stylists, make-up artists, art directors, prop department, the photographer, the client, the advertising agency, and the talent. Even last minute purchases helped the shooting go so much smoother—going to the Apple store to buy an I-Pad so that the client could view each shot instantly without crowding around Ryan’s computer. This way they could see the image from a different room even and let him know their opinions--what they liked and what they thought needed to be changed or touched up, which is extremely helpful when you are shooting for a client’s approval.

It’s funny to me because I never once thought about this type of photography when I started out, but it’s been such a cool experience to see how all of this done. As a photojournalist, you get an assignment, go out with your single bag of equipment (mine including a single body, two lenses, a flip vid and an audio recorder) and try your hardest not to interfere and not to make an impression on the people or the scene you are shooting. You want everything to be as real and as untouched as possible. On top of that, you’re typically alone. With this, it’s the complete opposite. Location fees are paid, clients fly in from out of town, talent is specifically chosen, and everything within the shot is manipulated to look the best that it can. It’s a different type of photography but I’m so glad I’ve had the opportunity to experience it and see it from start to finish.

It's been an incredibly long time since I've posted anything on here and to be honest I haven't been shooting too much lately. I graduated from UC a month ago and have been keeping busy assisting a photographer, working as a server at an Irish pub in Kentucky, working at UC's student newspaper, and trying to freelance.

It's funny how when you reach the end of something you think about the beginning constantly, and in addition to that, how much you debate about how to create another new beginning. At the moment I'm just trying to keep busy and connected at the same time to hopefully run head first into an opportunity.

The beginning of my college career was a mess for a year and a half until I finally settled down in Cincinnati studying photojournalism after spending time at Ohio University, Raymond Walters Community College, and working in Colorado. Living in Colorado opened my mind and my world in so many ways. I lived there with my boyfriend at the time, our futon mattress on the floor and our TV on an empty box. We didn't care about anything other than exploring the new place we were living in and simply taking advantage of having the mountains so close to us. Now, when my friends talk about moving in with their boyfriends, it's a completely different scenario. At the time, we were 19 and no one understood why we were moving so far away together and what that must mean. Yes, we were in love. No, we weren't going to be gone forever. It was an adventure we could do together, something we both needed and something that was so necessary in a way that I can't really explain in words. It was just natural for us and for our relationship at the time. Moving to Colorado was the best decision I could have made.

It took a long time for me to get started in photojournalism. I didn't have the courage or the confidence to get started or even know how to get started. I entered into informational graphics at OU simply because it was in the same vicinity as the photojournalism program and I could be surrounded by it despite my lack in skill, experience, and knowledge. Even after starting at UC it took me some time to become oriented to it and be able to really pursue projects and stories I cared about.

Now that I've graduated I kind of feel like I'm right back where I was five years ago, debating where to apply, what to do, and how to go about doing it all. Some of the biggest influences throughout the past few years (excluding people close to me) have been living in Colorado and San Francisco and meeting so many new people and experiencing so many new things. Maybe in order to find out where to go from here I need to make a move, have another experience, and keep my eyes open for new opportunities.

The above photos were taken Thursday outside of Hyde Park United Methodist Church. I had been driving by and loved the contrast between the sky and the light hitting the trees and buildings.

I've always been intrigued by different religious groups, the ways they each express their faith, and its prevalence throughout history and across the world. A year and a half ago I documented members and services of a mosque in Clifton as part of a long-term project for one of my photojournalism classes. It was just down the street from campus--a structure so physically close but a lifestyle and culture that were different from anything I had experienced before. I wore a headscarf out of respect, but many women were dressed in the full-length, traditional burqa--a few of them covering everything but their eyes. The mosque is separated into two floors by gender, so most of my time spent there was up on the balcony with the other women looking down over the crowd of men below us. It was a culture shock in my own hometown.

Over the summer I met a man in San Francisco who was born into a Christian family but who, upon entering a mosque, had his life change drastically. Here is a short audio clip from his description of what it was like being inside a mosque for the first time and how it felt to be a Muslim American after the 9/11 attack on the twin towers.

Chemical Explosion and Fire in Clifton

I was helping another photographer download her files into the News Record's server when Ariel Cheung came into the office saying that something was going on outside of the Engineering Research Center. We headed outside and found that the building had been evacuated and firefighters and hazardous material team were investigating a chemical spill and explosion. Shortly after the team safely exited the building, we saw a huge cloud of smoke coming from a distance, and the firefighters quickly left campus to extinguish a fire that started in a vacant house off of Ludlow. Ariel and I ran from campus to Brookline Ave., arriving after most of the smoke had cleared. Here are a few photos from the day.

A long, overdue update

I realize that since leaving San Francisco I’ve also left my blog unattended—It’s been one day less than a month since I found my way back onto the highways and backstreets of Cincinnati, and following in the same pattern as before, took off working the second I returned home. I left on my road trip across the states to San Francisco for the summer less than 24 hours after my final exam in June and started work for the paper a few days later. I returned home after another cross country road trip at 11:30 am, 30 minutes before my first production meeting with the school paper, The News Record, not even having time to shower or unload my car. Or even go home, for that matter. My first day back was spent in the News Record’s office, and also happened to be the first time I’ve ever spent more than a few minutes in there.

Since being back I’ve started another internship with photographer Ryan Kurtz , who does some really amazing work. The first week with him, which was also the first full week of classes, I spent 26 hours with him and his assistants on a shoot for Cincinnati Magazine’s Bridal issue. It was my first time ever being a part of a production like that and it was really fun being in the midst of make-up artists, designers, and models. Having no background in lighting, studio, or on-location work, these few weeks have been filled with new experiences including architectural photography, Children Hospital’s annual report, and product/food photography. Being an assistant is good for me because I can see how he works and responds to different situations without the pressure of having to solve them directly myself as a newcomer, and I definitely recommend it to anybody who has an interest in learning this type of photography. Commercial work is a completely different beast than photojournalism and it’s still taking me some time to get used to the set-up and post-work involved with this medium.

Working as the multimedia editor at The News Record has started out slowly but should be picking up more as the quarter presses on. Apart from work and the two classes I have left before graduating (which, I am still shocked by, is this December—I miscalculated previously and thought I had more time than that), I spent a lot of time in the last month with my brother who had moved home from Colorado for the summer months. He moved, once again, to South Korea Saturday morning under contract to teach English for a year in Daegu. He doesn’t speak the language, doesn’t know anybody, and only took a few bags—one of which was completely filled with shoes of every sort—apparently they don’t carry his size over there. He won’t have a phone for a year—the internet will be the only form of communication for over 12 months, so skype and email will have to do.

It’s been a busy 4 weeks and I’m looking forward to seeing how the remainder of the quarter, and my college career, goes (how has it already been over four years since graduating high school?).

I also want to give a HUGE thank you to everyone at the San Francisco Examiner, Mark Wurzer, the UC journalism staff, and Scripps for the amazing opportunity that this summer’s internship offered. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience or better people to be surrounded by, both in and out of the office.

During my first week here I was at Pier 14 and a woman threw a bouquet of red flowers into the ocean and then walked away without looking back. The next day I went to Ocean Beach and a man and his two children were placing single red roses in the sand as they walked along the shoreline.

It's times like this when taking a photograph feels strictly like "taking" and nothing more. You're taking that moment from someone, a moment that you rudely intruded upon. A moment that means more to them than you'll ever understand.

Sometimes, you don't get to say goodbye. Sometimes, a flower or a symbol is all you have to offer. Being 2000 miles away from home, saying goodbye wasn't even an option. Rest in peace grandma, I love you.

The San Francisco LGBT Pride Celebration and Parade is the largest LGBT gathering in the nation. Sunday June 27, 2010 marked the 40th anniversary and thousands came to celebrate as over 200 parade contingents marched down Market Street from Beale Street to 8th Street.
